Using your Student Leap Card for Travel

When using your Student Leap Card for traveling, you get great discounts vs. standard adult fares on all public transport operators as well as some private services in the Republic of Ireland. You can also avail of the Leap Card CAPPING function (see details below) - Never spend more then you need to with your Student Leap Card! Sample fares (below) are correct as at 7th December 2018.

You can use your SLC as a valid student ID to purchase discounted travel tickets or you can use it PAYG (Pay as you go) any where the Leap system has been installed. You can also load rambler tickets onto your card. Rambler tickets can be used on Go-Ahead Ireland services and Dublin Bus scheduled services including Airlink and Xpresso (excluding Nitelink, Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services).

Using Student Leap Card As A Student ID

Most bus operators in Ireland accept the Student Leap Card as a student ID to allow you to buy discounted tickets. Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Commuter Rail in Dublin accept Student Leap Card as the ONLY valid means of verifying you are entitled to the student fare.

Using Student Leap Card PAYG

Where the leap card system is installed you can top up your card with travel credit and use your SLC PAYG. Each time you travel simply tap your card on the validators (located inside buses and on train/Luas platforms) and Leap Card will deduct the correct amount from your card. With Leap Card capping in place, you’ll never pay more than you need to when travelling with your SLC.

DUblin Bus/Go-ahead ireland Rambler tickets

A Rambler Ticket may suit you if you take more than 2 buses in a day and if you travel infrequently e.g. 3 days during one week and then 2 days during the next week. Rambler tickets are valid for consecutive or non-consecutive days of travel. If you travel 5 days or more in a week, you may be better off using Travel Credit instead of Ramblers; as fare capping will cap your weekly spend on Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland at rates less than the 5 day Rambler. The choice is yours! If you have purchased a Rambler ticket for your Leap Card, you scan your card on the validator on the right hand side when you get on the bus.

Leap Price capping

Leap your way to lower fares! If you’re a regular Leap Card user, you’ll be glad to hear that a cap has been put on the amount you can spend while using your Leap Card on one day or week. Once you hit the cap, you travel free for the rest of the day/week. Capping applies to Dublin Bus, Luas, DART/Commuter Rail services in Dublin.

The Cap Amount for students:

Type Dublin Bus Luas Dart & Commuter Rail
Daily €5.00* €5.00 €7.00
Weekly €20.00 €20.00 €27.00
Multi Mode - Dublin Bus / Luas / DART / Commuter Rail
Type Daily Weekly
Student €7.50 €30.00

Once you hit the cap value on the applicable transport operator, no further travel credit will be deducted as you use your Leap Card on their services and you can continue to travel for free. Please note, even once you hit the cap value, you should still Touch On and Touch Off as normal in order to have a valid ticket.

* For Xpresso, Outer Suburban 2, and Nitelink services a maximum of €2.50 of the fare contributes towards the cap. Airlink, tours and special events are excluded from the cap. Capping only applies to journeys taken by the card holder. If the card holder decides to pay for extra people to travel on Dublin Bus, this spend will be additional and will not be capped.
